Mary Washington rallies past Wolverines

READING, Pa. – The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 4-9 Saturday afternoon with an 81-72 loss to Mary Washington (Va.) in the consolation game of Albright College's TGIFriday's/Sheraton Tournament.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the first half. However, Mary Washington closed the gap to 39-36 by halftime. Grove City extended the lead to 52-47 but Mary Washington took control of the game with a 19-2 run midway through the second half.

Senior forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone) led the Wolverines with 14 points, including a pair of three-point goals. Senior guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) and sophomore guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) each added 13 points.

Grove City shot 26 of 52 (50 percent) from the floor for the game. However, Mary Washington out-rebounded the Wolverines, 36-23. Mary Washington also went 22-for-27 at the foul line while Grove City made 11 of 13 free throws.

Justin Baker led Mary Washington with 30 points while Mike Lee added 21.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at home against archrival Westminster at 7:30 p.m.
