Grove City tops Westminster, 106-94

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College men's basketball team captured a 106-94 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster Wednesday night at the Grove City College Arena in Grove City's 2005-06 PAC opener.

The Wolverines are now 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.

Five Wolverines scored in double figures, led by senior forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone). Cotherman poured in a career-high 23 points while junior forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added a career-best 22 points. Smith also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) tallied 19 points while sophomore forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) chipped in a career-high 11 points. Freshman forward John Scheller (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) scored 10 points in 11 minutes off the bench.

As a team, Grove City shot 63 percent (39 of 62) from the floor. The Wolverines also out-rebounded Westminster, 44-32.

Grove City led 57-53 at the half and then used an 11-1 run early in the second half to extend the lead to 18, 77-59, with 13 minutes left. Westminster (4-10, 1-1 PAC) trimmed the lead to 89-80 with 4:45 left but could get no closer. Grove City made its last nine free throws in the final three minutes.

Westminster shot 29 of 74 (39 percent) from the floor. The Titans made 18 of 58 (31 percent) three-point attempts. Mark DeMonaco led Westminster with 23 points while Nick Adams added 18. Each made four three-point goals.

Grove City turned the ball over just 14 times against the Titans' continual pressure defense. The 106 points is the highest point total scored by the Wolverines in a regulation game under head coach Steve Lamie. Grove City has also not allowed an opponent to go over 100 points in regulation in 308 games, dating back to 1993.

The Wolverines will host Waynesburg Saturday in PAC action at 3 p.m.
