Waynesburg nips Grove City, 64-63

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday night with a 64-63 loss at Waynesburg (14-9, 7-4 PAC) in Rudy Marisa Field House. Waynesburg guard Beau Wilson drained two free throws with two seconds left to give the Yellow Jackets the win.

Grove City took a 63-62 lead with 10 seconds left on two free throws from sophomore forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel). However, Wilson drove into the paint and was fouled with two seconds left. Wilson finished with 16 points and went over the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Grove City sophomore Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) led the Wolverines with 17 points while senior forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone) added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Senior guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) fired in 10 points and hauled in five rebounds.

The Wolverines trailed 54-45 with 6:36 left but eventually cut the lead to one, 59-58, with 2:22 left on a Cotherman basket. Grove City limited Waynesburg to just 35 percent (19 of 54) shooting from the floor for the game. However, Waynesburg made 21 of 32 foul shots while Grove City went 14-for-17 at the line.

Grove City out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets, 39-29, but turned the ball over 18 times. Jeff Nero led Waynesburg with 17 points. It is Waynesburg's first regular-season sweep of Grove City since 1998.

Grove City will host Bethany Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
