CMU tops Grove City, 70-52

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 0-2 Saturday night with a 70-52 loss to Carnegie Mellon (2-0) in the second night of the annual West Penn Classic at Allegheny College's David Wise Center.

Grove City jumped out to a 9-2 lead early but CMU responded with a 22-5 run. CMU led 32-22 at the half. Grove City closed to within 36-31 early in the second half but could get no closer.

Senior Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led the Wolverines with 11 points while sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added nine. Grove City shot 34 percent (18 of 53) from the floor for the game while Carnegie Mellon shot 26 of 57 (46 percent).

Jon Wolleben and Ryan Einwag each tossed in 11 points to lead CMU. The Tartans owned a 43-25 edge on the glass.

Grove City will host Penn State Altoona Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
