Grove City topples Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting and senior center Craig Hallman (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) added 16 points on 8-for-11 accuracy as Grove City earned a 74-64 win over Geneva Wednesday night at Metheny Field House.

Freshman center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting for Grove City (2-2), which has now won two straight games.

Grove City limited Geneva (5-3) to just 18 percent (5 of 28) shooting from the field in the second half. The Wolverines also committed just eight turnovers for the game.

Grove City led 40-37 at the half and maintained a slim lead throughout the second half. Leading 61-60, the Wolverines finally broke away with a 6-0 spurt. Gibson and Hallman each hit jumpers while junior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) added a pair of free throws. Carr then sealed the win with four free throws in the final 20 seconds.

The Wolverines shot 43 percent (27 of 63) from the floor and 18 of 21 at the foul line. Geneva owned a 42-38 edge on the glass. Carr grabbed seven rebounds while Gibson pulled in six boards. Carr also had a game-high five assists.

Kyle McDermott led Geneva with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Greg McDivitt had a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. Geneva entered the game averaging 82.3 points per game and shooting over 52 percent from the floor for the season.

It is Grove City's first win at Geneva since Jan. 9, 1999. The Wolverines now lead the all-time series 80-69. Geneva is a provisional member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference and will begin playing a full PAC schedule next season.

Grove City will visit Juniata Monday night in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
