Wolverines win in OT

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Junior guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) fired in a career-high 27 points while sophomore guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) added a career-high 18 points Saturday afternoon, helping the Grove City College men's basketball team earn an 87-77 overtime victory over Wright State-Lake in the consolation game of the McDonald's of Bluffton Holiday Tournament.

Grove City trailed 72-70 in the closing seconds of regulation but McCoy assisted a layup by sophomore forward John Scheller (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) with six seconds left, tying the game. In the extra period, Grove City went 3-for-3 from the floor and outscored Wright State-Lake, 15-5.

Gerber gave Grove City an insurmountable 83-75 lead with 1:37 left in overtime by draining his third three-point goal of the game. McCoy also drilled three three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) earned All-Tournament Team honors after a 14-point, six-assist effort Saturday. In Friday night's semifinals against Cincinnati-Claremont, Gibson had 17 points and eight assists. 

Grove City (4-6) trailed 36-28 at the half but the Wolverines opened the second half with a 16-4 run. Gerber, Gibson, McCoy and junior Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) all hit three-pointers during the blitz.

The Wolverines shot 55 percent (6 of 11) from behind the arc in the second half. Overall, Grove City shot 51 percent (31 of 61) from the floor. The Wolverines also committed just seven turnovers for the game.

Junior forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Wright State-Lake owned a 47-35 edge on the glass. Travis Van Skyock led Wright State-Lake (6-12) with 22 points.

Grove City is now 1-3 in overtime this season. Grove City will host Case Western Reserve Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
