Wolverines nip Saint Vincent, 63-62

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team led wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon but still had to survive an errant last-second shot from Saint Vincent's Marc Duncan to earn a 63-62 home win over Saint Vincent in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes.

Duncan recorded a steal with three seconds left in the backcourt and shot an off-balance jumper in the lane with one second left. However, the shot glanced off the backboard and Grove City escaped with the win.

Junior guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) led Grove City (6-8 overall) with a game-high 15 points while junior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) added a dozen points. Sophomore guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recorded 11 points for the Wolverines.

Grove City led by as many as 11 in the first half, 24-13. The Wolverines led 37-29 at the half but Saint Vincent (7-6) opened the second half with a game-tying 8-0 run. Grove City reclaimed the lead but led by no more than six points over the final 15 minutes of the game.

A Duncan layup with four seconds left cut Grove City's lead to 63-62. Following a time-out, Duncan recorded the steal but could not convert the potential game-winning basket.

Billy Bains led the Bearcats with 14 points while Roscoe Biggers chipped in 10. Grove City out-rebounded Saint Vincent 43-33. The Wolverines shot 38 percent (21 of 55) from the floor for the game while Saint Vincent went 23 of 56 (41 percent). Saint Vincent made just 11 of 20 free throws, however, while Grove City was 17 of 25 at the foul line.

The teams had not met since a 53-52 Saint Vincent win Jan. 25, 1982. Saturday's game did not count in the PAC standings due to Saint Vincent's provisional Division III status.

Grove City will host Penn State Beaver Monday night at 7 p.m.
