Wolverines top Thiel on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) fired in 21 points, including five three-point goals, Saturday afternoon to help lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 65-57 win over visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena on Senior Day.

Grove City (16-9, 9-3 PAC) led 22-8 with 4:41 left in the first half but Thiel (10-14, 4-8) eventually closed the gap to 26-20 by halftime. Thiel then whittled the lead to 40-38 with 12:25 left in the game. However, Grove City junior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) produced a three-point play and Gerber followed with a three-pointer that pushed the lead to 46-40.

Later in the half, Gerber extended Grove City's lead to 59-47 with back-to-back three-pointers. The Wolverines then sealed the win with 6-for-6 marksmanship at the foul line in the final minute. Sophomore center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) drained a pair, followed by four straight free throws by senior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk).

Carr finished with 15 points while Gibson added 11 for the Wolverines. Grove City shot 10 of 20 (50 percent) from behind the three-point line. For the game, the Wolverines shot 44 percent (21 of 48) from the field. Thiel, meanwhile, shot 42 percent (23 of 55) from the field.  Thiel out-rebounded Grove City, 35-31.

Joe Herrmann led Thiel with a game-high 27 points.

Grove City honored seniors Carr, Gerber, forward Bobby Turner (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and guard Joe Capotosta (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) prior to the game as they played their final home regular-season game.

The Wolverines will host Waynesburg Tuesday night in the PAC Championship Tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Grove City is the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
