Gibson tops 1,000 but Wolverines fall

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 73-59 verdict to visiting Thomas More College Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Senior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a team-leading 20 points to become Grove City's 23rd men's basketball player with at least 1,000 career points. Gibson now has 1,005 career points at Grove City.

Grove City (10-9, 4-5 PAC) trailed 33-31 at halftime but grabbed the lead after seniors Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) and John Scheller (Frisco, Texas/Hoover, Ohio) both buried three-point goals. However, Thomas More (15-7, 9-2 PAC) took the lead for good with 14:30 left as Kurt Bovard drained a three-pointer.

Grove City limited Thomas More to 34 percent (19 of 56) shooting from the field. The Wolverines yielded just eight second-half field goals in 30 attempts (27 percent) in the second half. However, Thomas More made six three-point goals in the second half. For the game, Thomas More shot 12 of 32 (37 percent) from behind the three-point line.

The Wolverines shot 38 percent (19 for 50) for the game. Grove City had 16 turnovers while Thomas More had 10 turnovers. Thomas More owned a 40-37 edge on the glass. Daniel Ellis led Thomas More with 20 points while Romell Salone contributed 15 points.

McCoy finished with seven points and a game-high four assists. Grove City recognized seniors David Crosby (Buffalo, N.Y./Christian Central), Gibson, McCoy and Scheller prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City will host Bethany Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in PAC action at the Grove City College Arena.
