Early struggles cost Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team wrapped up the home portion of the 2008-09 schedule Wednesday night with a 74-62 setback against visiting Saint Vincent (21-3) in the Grove City College Arena.

Saint Vincent charged out to a 14-2 lead in the first half as Grove City scored just once in its first 15 possessions. Saint Vincent led 35-23 at halftime and held off the Wolverines in the second half.

Junior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) paced Grove City with 16 points while senior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 13 points. Freshman guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) added 10 points and a team-high five assists.

Grove City shot 45 percent (24 of 53) from the field for the game. The Wolverines committed just five second-half turnovers after turning the ball over 17 times in the first half. Grove City also out-rebounded Saint Vincent 36-26. Matson and sophomore guard Caleb Orchard (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) each pulled in six rebounds. Matson added three steals.

Joey Butler led Saint Vincent with 23 points and seven assists. Tre'sor Kalambay added 15 points. Saint Vincent sank 26 of 56 (46 percent) shots from the field and committed 14 turnovers.

Grove City concludes the regular season Saturday at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thiel. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
