Grove City rolls past Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 71-50 victory over host Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia. Grove City led 40-26 at halftime before breaking the game open in the second half.

Senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) rifled in a team-high 18 points, including three three-point goals, while junior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) poured in 14 points. Senior guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 13 points. Gibson and sophomore guard Caleb Orchard (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) both drilled three three-point goals.

Grove City (12-11, 6-6 PAC) shot 51 percent (25 of 49) from the field for the game, including a 14-for-26 effort in the first half. Defensively, the Wolverines limited Thiel to just 29 percent (18 of 63) shooting from the floor. Grove City also out-rebounded Thiel 42-36.

Freshman forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) pulled in a team-high five rebounds while freshman guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) had four assists.

Grove City led 14-12 in the first half but broke the game open with an 11-0 run. Matson started the run with a lay-up while O'Keefe and sophomore center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) both hit jumpers. Verderber finished with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting. Orchard also hit a three during the run.

McCoy's final three of the game gave Grove City its biggest lead, 67-40, at the 7:11 mark.

Nick Sefscik led Thiel (2-22, 1-11 PAC) with 19 points.

Grove City will be the No. 5 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines will visit Washington & Jefferson at 8 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
