Balanced effort carries Grove City

MONACA, Pa. -- Four Grove City College players scored in double figures Tuesday night to help lift the Wolverines to an 82-59 win over host Penn State Beaver in non-conference men's basketball action at the Beaver Field House.

Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired in 19 points to pace the Wolverines (2-2) while junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) chalked up a season-high 18 points in the win. Senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) added 15 points and sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) scored 14 points and pulled in a game-high six rebounds for Grove City.

Grove City broke the game open in the first half with a 16-2 run. Matson and Tomaselli each scored seven points during the run. Grove City extended its lead to 41-23 by halftime.

Penn State Beaver (3-2) closed to within 48-41 with 13 minutes left in the game but the Wolverines quickly scored six straight points. Senior guard Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) drained a pair of free throws before O'Keefe hit back-to-back baskets.

Grove City shot 53 percent (28 of 53) from the field for the game. The Wolverines converted 13 of 22 (59 percent) attempts from the floor in the second half. Defensively, Grove City held the Lions to 34 percent (18 of 53) shooting for the game. Grove City owned a 35-25 edge in rebounds.

Tim Kubis and Tony Houghton both scored 12 points to lead Penn State Beaver.

Grove City will host Thomas More December 2 at 7:30 p.m. It is Grove City's home opener as well as the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
