Fast start fizzles at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 65-43 setback at Washington & Jefferson in PAC action at the Henry Memorial Center.

Grove City (3-3 overall) jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the first half before going cold from the field. The Wolverines converted just one field goal over the final nine minutes of the first half and finished the period 5 for 23 (22 percent) from the field.

In the second half, W&J held the Wolverines scoreless for the first seven minutes of the period before freshman center Jeff Newell (Boone, N.C./Watauga) recorded a layup. For the game, Grove City shot just 27 percent (12 of 44).

W&J (3-5, 1-0) took control of the game with a 44-6 run. W&J shot 41 percent (20 of 49) from the field for the game.

Senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) led Grove City with eight points each. Brian Felker led W&J with 14 points.

Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) grabbed a game-high six rebounds for Grove City. W&J out-rebounded Grove City 36-32.

Grove City will visit Hiram in non-conference action Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
