Wolverines roll past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. ' The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 76-59 victory over host Waynesburg at the Rudy Marisa Field House.

Grove City trailed 34-31 at halftime but took control of the game with an 11-0 run late in the second half. Senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) recorded nine of the 11 points during the outburst, including 7-for-7 marksmanship at the foul line.

O'Keefe finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds as four Grove City scored in double figures. Junior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) fired in 13 points and added five assists while senior guard Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) added 12 points. Sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) posted 10 points, all in the second half.

Waynesburg (0-7, 0-2 PAC) jumped out to a 13-5 lead but Grove City countered with a 12-2 run. Freshman center Jeff Newell (Boone, N.C./Watauga) ignited the run with back-to-back layups while senior guard Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) knotted the game at 15 with a three-pointer.

The teams swapped the lead six more times before Grove City took the lead for good, 52-50, on a Tomaselli basket at the 10:00 mark.

Grove City shot 49 percent (22 of 45) from the field, including a 5-for-10 effort on three-point goals. The Wolverines also converted 27 of 30 (90 percent) attempts at the foul line. Grove City went 22 for 23 at the line in the second half.

Waynesburg shot 22 of 63 (35 percent) from the floor. Grove City limited the Yellow Jackets to 31-percent shooting (9 of 29) in the second half.

Grove City (4-4) owned a 41-26 rebounding edge. O'Keefe also blocked five shots. Ben Altmeyer led Waynesburg with 18 points.

Grove City will host Kenyon Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in non-conference action.
