Thiel clips Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City College players scored in double figures Wednesday night but the host Wolverines dropped a 75-65 decision to visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at the Grove City College Arena. The loss snaps Grove City's six-game win streak.

Senior center Andy O'Keefe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) pumped in 19 points for the Wolverines (14-8, 8-3 PAC) while sophomore guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) recorded 16 points and a team-high five assists. Sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) added 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots.

Thiel (13-9, 6-4 PAC) took control of the game with a 23-5 run in the second half. O'Keefe tied the game at 52 with a three-point play at the 11-minute mark. However, Thiel limited Grove City to one field goal over the next six minutes of action.

Vandermeer gave Grove City a 35-33 lead late in the first half with a three-point goal. Freshman center Jeff Newell (Boone, N.C./Watauga) followed with a layup but Thiel's Blair Rozenblad scored in the closing moments of the half to trim Grove City's lead to 37-35 at the half.

Devon Adams led Thiel with 21 points and six assists while Rozenblad had 18 points and seven rebounds. Thiel shot 47 percent (31 of 66) from the field for the game. Grove City converted 23 of 51 (45 percent) attempts from the floor. Thiel outrebounded Grove City 43-26. The Wolverines had just one offensive rebound in the game.

Thiel has now won seven straight games. Grove City is atop the conference with an 8-3 league record. Thomas More is 7-2 in the conference and hosts Waynesburg (2-17, 0-10 PAC) Thursday in a game moved from Wednesday to Thursday due to inclement weather.

Grove City will visit longtime rival Geneva Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
