Saint Vincent slips past Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team limited visiting Saint Vincent (11-5, 4-2 PAC) to just 35 percent shooting (21 of 59) from the field but the host Wolverines dropped a 58-48 decision in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City led 25-20 at halftime but 13 second-half turnovers helped Saint Vincent rally for the win. The Bearcats surged ahead with a 13-2 run in the second half and took the lead for good on a Tauvon Pettiford basket with 9:32 left.

Grove City closed to within 47-44 with 4:32 left on a jumper by junior Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler). After the teams traded baskets, Saint Vincent sealed the win by nine straight points over the next three minutes.

Junior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) led Grove City with 15 points. Junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) had four assists.

Dennis Bassich led the Bearcats with 16 points and B.J. McGill contributed 14.

Grove City shot 18 of 42 (43 percent) from the field. Saint Vincent held a 36-34 rebounding advantage.

Grove City (4-11, 1-5 PAC) closes the first half of the conference schedule Wednesday at Westminster. Tip-off is 8 p.m.
