Wolverines fall on road, 73-69

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball placed three players in double figures in scoring Wednesday night but the Wolverines dropped a 73-69 decision to host Mount Aloysius in non-conference action at the Health and Fitness Center.

Senior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) poured in 20 points to pace Grove City while sophomore forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) tallied a career-high 13 points. Junior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) added a dozen points for the Wolverines, who shot 29 of 55 (53 percent) from the floor.

Grove City led by as many as nine points on three different occasions in the first half but Mount Aloysius (8-11) rallied to take a 34-31 lead by halftime.

The Wolverines opened the second half on a 15-4 run as Tomaselli scored seven points and Rambacher added a pair of baskets. Mount Aloysius reclaimed the lead, 49-48, when Marcus Stewart hit two free throws with 11 minutes left. The teams exchanged the lead seven times over the final 11 minutes of the game.

Grove City trailed 71-69 with 17 seconds left but turned over the ball and Mount Aloysius' Joey Stephenson sealed the win by hitting two foul shots with nine seconds left. Grove City committed 25 turnovers, including 17 in the first half.

Mount Aloysius shot 39 percent (21 of 54) from the field. Demetrius Davis led the Mounties with 28 points and Stephenson finished with 15 points.

Grove City owned a 30-28 edge in rebounds. Rambacher pulled in seven rebounds and Verderber had six. Senior guard Bryn Moran (Columbus, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) recorded a career-high seven assists while junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) had five assists and six steals. Tomaselli posted four assists.

Grove City (5-15) hosts Bethany Saturday at 3 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
