Gallant effort falls short on road

LATROBE, Pa. -- Saint Vincent junior guard Dennis Bassich drained a go-ahead three-point goal with 41 seconds left to help lift the host Bearcats to a 56-53 win over the Grove City College men's basketball team Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference competition at the Carey Center.

Grove City had two potential game-tying three-point attempts in the final half-minute but could get neither shot to fall.

Saint Vincent (17-7, 9-4 PAC) took a 49-45 lead with 4:30 left but the Wolverines charged back ahead on back-to-back three-pointers from freshman forward Matt Roush (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods). Bassich tied the game with two free throws with 1:34 left but senior guard Bryn Moran (Columbus, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) put the Wolverines back ahead with two foul shots of his own moments later. Saint Vincent forged a 53-53 tie on a Grant Latus putback.

Junior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) paced Grove City with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Mike Grist (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) fired in 12 points and added seven rebounds. Grove City shot 19 of 47 (40 percent) from the field for the game.

Tauvon Pettiford led Saint Vincent with 16 points. Bassich added 13. Saint Vincent converted 23 of 61 (38 percent) shots from the floor.

Grove City turned over the ball 14 times while Saint Vincent had 10 turnovers. Saint Vincent owned a 35-34 rebounding edge.

Senior forward Luke Tomaselli (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) recorded four steals for the Wolverines. The game featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties.

Grove City (5-19, 2-11 PAC) closes the regular season Saturday at 3 p.m. against conference rival Westminster.
