Thomas More outlasts Grove City

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 68-55 decision to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More Saturday afternoon in the Saints' Connor Convocation Center. Thomas More (6-1, 2-0 PAC) used a 9-0 run over a four-minute period down the stretch to take control of the game.

Senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) led Grove City (3-3, 0-2) with 10 points while freshman guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Matson added five steals and three assists.

Colt Stafford led Thomas More with 16 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Whelan contributed 15 points.

The Wolverines pulled to within 53-48 with six minutes left when Marmelstein hit two free throws after a technical foul and Matson followed with a jumper. Thomas More then embarked on its 9-0 run, holding Grove City scoreless until a layup by freshman Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) with two minutes remaining.

Grove City shot 37 percent (22 of 60) from the field while Thomas More fired in 21 of 48 (44 percent) field goal attempts. The Saints shot 57 percent (12 of 21) from the field in the second half. Thomas More also owned a 38-29 edge in rebounds. Thomas More led 25-23 at halftime and did not relinquish the lead in the second half.

Grove City will visit conference foe Saint Vincent Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
