Wolverines rip W&J
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team won its third straight Presidents' Athletic Conference game by rolling to an 87-67 victory at Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon in the Henry Memorial Center.
Grove City (10-12, 6-8 PAC) led 48-24 at the half and led by as many as 27 in the second half.
Senior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) tied a career high with 23 points for Grove City while senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired in 22 points, pulled in 10 rebounds and added seven assists.
Grove City fell behind 10-5 in the first half before outscoring W&J (6-17, 2-12 PAC) 43-14 over the final 14 minutes of the half. The Wolverines took the lead for good with 12:54 left on a pair of Verderber free throws.
The Wolverines shot 62 percent (18 of 29) from the field in the first half while limiting W&J to an 8-for-34 (24 percent) effort in the first 20 minutes. Grove City also held the Presidents without a field goal over the final five minutes of the half.
Matson's three-pointer with 14 minutes left gave Grove City its largest lead, 58-31. W&J cut the lead to 11 on three occasions in the final 10 minutes but Verderber and junior Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) recorded back-to-back layups to ignite Grove City's final push.
For the game, Grove City shot 54 percent (33 of 61) from the floor. W&J went 22 for 66 (33 percent). Grove City owned a 39-37 edge in rebounds. The Wolverines had 11 turnovers and W&J had 10.
Freshman guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded a career-high seven assists for the Wolverines, who had 19 total assists.
Zach Bellhy led W&J with 24 points.
Grove City will host Waynesburg Wednesday at 8 p.m.
