Kenyon tops Wolverines

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 62-50 decision at Kenyon Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Tomisch Center.

Sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led Grove City with 10 points and seven rebounds while senior center Steve Battaglia (North Olmsted, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) added eight points. Junior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) and sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) both had seven points.

Grove City jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and after a Kenyon spurt, the Wolverines took a 10-9 lead on a Schell jumper in the lane with 16:29 left in the half. However, Kenyon (2-1) held Grove City scoreless for the next eight minutes as the Lords took a 19-10 lead. Grove City chipped the lead to 20-16 with 6:41 left in the half on a three-pointer from sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) but Kenyon eventually stretched the gap to 27-20 by halftime.

Kenyon then maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the second half.

Marmelstein and Schwartz both had four assists. For the game, Grove City shot 35 percent (17 for 49) from the field. Defensively, Grove City limited Kenyon to a 23-for-66 (35 percent) outing from the floor. Kenyon owned a 46-43 rebound edge. Grove City had 17 turnovers and Kenyon had just five.

Ikenna Nwadibia led Kenyon with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Brian Lebowitz had 14 points and 11 rebounds. 

Grove City (0-3) begins Presidents' Athletic Conference play November 28 at Thomas More. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
