Grove City drops conference opener

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday night with a 64-45 setback at Thomas More (6-0, 1-0) in the Connor Convocation Center.

Grove City fell behind 13-2 early but countered with a 12-2 spurt that featured a three-point goal from sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and consecutive layups from freshman guard Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry).

Thomas More broke open the game in the latter portion of the second half by outscoring the Wolverines 19-5 over the final 7:33. Grove City shot just 33 percent (7 of 21) from the field in the second half. For the game, Grove City shot 38 percent (17 of 45) from the field while holding Thomas More to a 22-for-62 (36 percent) effort.

Freshman forward Mark Pilarski (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) led Grove City with 10 points and Giesler added nine points on three three-point goals. Sophomore guards Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) both had three assists.

Ryan Hamm led Thomas More with 13 points. Thomas More outrebounded Grove City 42-30. Grove City turned over the ball 22 times and Thomas More had 19 turnovers.

Grove City (0-4, 0-1) hosts Bethany Saturday at 3 p.m. in conference action. The Wolverines will be opening their home schedule Saturday afternoon.
