Grove City rallies past York, 65-60
YORK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team rallied from a 33-20 halftime deficit to earn a 65-60 victory over host York (Pa.) College in the semifinals of York's Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament Friday night at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) fired in a game-high 24 points for the Wolverines, including 14 in the second half.
Meanwhile, sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) scored all 16 of his points in the second half, helping fuel Grove City's comeback. Giesler shot 6 for 6 from the field, including a 4-for-4 effort on three-point goals.
Grove City used a 14-3 run early in the second half to forge a 41-41 tie with 11 minutes left. Sophomore forward Ford Reinalda (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) knotted the game with a three-pointer moments after Giesler and senior forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) had scored from the field.
Marmelstein tied the game 49-49 with six minutes left by hitting a three-pointer. Giesler put the Wolverines ahead to stay with another three-pointer. Marmelstein and Giesler again hit consecutive three-pointers as Grove City opened up a 59-50 lead with 3:25 left.
York (4-7) pulled to within 63-60 but sophomore guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) sealed the win by hitting two foul shots with three seconds left.
Durbin led the Wolverines with seven assists while Rambacher and sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) both had four assists. Rambacher also had seven rebounds, helping Grove City own a 39-36 rebounding edge.
For the game, Grove City shot 24 of 54 (44 percent) from the field, including a 16-for-27 (59 percent) effort in the second half. York shot 36 percent (21 of 59).
Mitch Kemp led York with 13 points.
Grove City will face Gettysburg (4-6) in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m.
