Gettysburg clips Grove City

YORK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 74-64 verdict to Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon in the championship game of York College's Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led Grove City with 12 points while sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and sophomore guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) both added 10 points.

Gettysburg jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led by as many as 16, 24-8, in the first half. Grove City trailed 40-28 at halftime but opened the second half with a 13-3 run as Giesler, Durbin and sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) all hit three-pointers. Senior forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) tied the game at 41 with a layup at the 14:00 mark.

Gettysburg (5-6) countered with a 14-3 spurt to take a 55-44 lead. Schwartz hit two foul shots with 5:21 left to bring the Wolverines to within 58-56. However, Grove City could get no closer.

Both teams shot 45 percent from the field. Grove City went 23 of 51 from the field while Gettysburg converted 18 of 40 attempts. Gettysburg did go 34 for 47 at the foul line while Grove City made 11 of 14 free throw attempts. Seventeen of Gettysburg's final 21 points came at the foul line.

Both teams had 30 rebounds. Rambacher led Grove City with 11 rebounds. Marmelstein had seven assists. He earned All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 15.5 points per game during the two-day event.

Alex Zurn led the Bullets with 22 points.

Grove City hosts Penn State Beaver Thursday at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
