Grove City earns 78-70 win at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) fired in a career-high 21 points and added six assists while classmate Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) posted 17 points and eight rebounds Wednesday night, helping lift the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 78-70 win at Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Memorial Field House.

Sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added 12 points for the Wolverines, who committed just seven turnovers in the game.

Grove City trailed 34-32 at halftime but took the lead for good with an 18-3 run midway through the second half. Junior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) broke a 50-50 tie with a three-pointer at the 13:00 mark. He then followed with a driving layup, helping ignite the blitz.

Following baskets from senior center Steve Battaglia (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) and sophomore forward Ford Reinalda (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown), Schwartz scored in the lane to push the Grove City lead to 61-53.

Marmelstein hit a three-pointer with 4:32 left, giving Grove City a 68-53 lead.

Grove City shot 55 percent (17 of 31) from the field in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines shot 29 of 64 (45 percent). Westminster went 23 of 55 (42 percent) from the floor.

Doug Smith led Westminster (5-11, 1-7) with 31 points, including 24 in the first half. Anthony Thomas scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half for the Titans.

Marmelstein and senior forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) both grabbed eight rebounds, helping the Wolverines own a 45-32 edge on the glass. Grove City yielded just two offensive rebounds.

Grove City (6-10, 3-5) opens the second half of the conference schedule Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against visiting Thomas More.
