Wolverines humble W&J, 60-52

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball captured its fourth road win in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night by picking up a 60-52 win over host Washington & Jefferson at the Henry Memorial Center.

Junior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) paced the Wolverines with a career-high 18 points, including four three-point goals. Defensively, the Wolverines forced 20 turnovers and held the Presidents 18 points under their season scoring average of 70 points per game.

Grove City trailed early but took the lead for good midway through the first half when sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) drilled consecutive three-pointers that put the Wolverines up 18-13. Grove City led 29-24 at halftime.

W&J (8-15, 6-8) closed to within 50-47 with six minutes left but Grove City blanked the Presidents until the 1:35 mark. During that span, freshman guard Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) registered a layup while Giesler and sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) both hit a pair of free throws.

Giesler finished with nine points while Marmelstein had eight. Reeves and sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each scored seven points.

Grove City shot 18 of 54 (33 percent) from the field while W&J went 23 of 54 (43 percent). W&J outrebounded Grove City 36-31.

Schwartz led Grove City with eight rebounds. Reeves had a career-high six steals. Sophomore guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) recorded three assists.

Ben Cecchini led W&J with 11 points and Mike Resnik added 10. Zach Bellhy added nine. He entered the game averaging 19 points per game.

Grove City (8-14, 4-9 PAC) will host Geneva at 3 p.m. Saturday in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
