Bluffton Rallies To Beat GCC, 89-80

BLUFFTON, OH, December 30, 1999--Bluffton converted 31 of 41 free throws to claim an 89-80 win over Grove City in the championship game of the McDonald's of Bluffton Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

The Wolverines, who fell to 2-7, led 43-33 at halftime, but couldn't keep Bluffton off the free-throw line in the second half as the Beavers buried 19 of 26 from the stripe to improve to 7-4 overall.  Grove City attempted just 15 free throws in the game, making eight.

Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport) nailed 7 of 10 shots from the floor, including 3 of 4 from outside the arc, to finish with a team-high 18 points.   David Stiansen (Telford, PA/Souderton) sank four threes and closed with 14 points.   Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) and Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) had nine points each.  Tanner Prosser (Brentwood, PA/Brentwood) led the way on the glass with eight boards. 

Pifer and Dan Quinn (Uniontown, OH/Green), who followed Wednesday's 24-point night with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting, were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bluffton's Travis Elsass led four Beavers in double figures with 23 points.

The Wolverines open the New Year at Penn State Behrend on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
