Saving the Best for Last

Box Score

GROVE CITY, PA, February 19, 2000--In his 89th and final start as a Wolverine, senior Damon Finazzo (Erie, PA/McDowell) posted a career-high 28 points and nine assists and freshman Tanner Prosser (Brentwood, PA/Brentwood) fired in 30 to lead Grove City past visiting Waynesburg, 92-77, in the season finale before 1,200 at the WolvArena.

The Wolverines improved to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, good for second place behind Thiel (6-2), who won back the title it surrendered to Grove City a year ago with an 85-64 win over Bethany on Saturday.  A Thiel loss would have forced a one-game playoff to decide the champion.  The Wolverines finished 11-14 overall with wins in their final three games and five of their last six.

Waynesburg fell to 14-10 overall, 4-4 in the PAC.

Prosser hit 11 of 18 from the floor and 7 of 9 from the stripe to notch his second 30-point game of the season.  He also added a game-high 14 rebounds to give GCC a 39-37 edge underneath.  Finazzo drilled 11 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 9 threes -- one triple shy of the school's single-game record.

Senior Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport) closed his stellar college career with 18 points, hitting four threes which tied his own single-season record of 50.   Pifer also owns the school record for career three-pointers made with 159 and shares the single-game mark (6).  Pifer and Chris Kreider (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) each recorded five assists.

Seniors Lee Huffman (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) and David Stiansen (Telford, PA/Souderton) contributed eight points and three assists, respectively, in their final outing.  Huffman, Stiansen, Pifer and Finazzo were each honored prior to the 4:00 p.m. tip-off in a Senior Day ceremony.

The Wolverines, who entered the game with the seventh-highest field-goal percentage in the nation, shot 53.7% from the floor to boost its season average to 48.7%.

Grove City led 45-43 at halftime, then broke open a 51-51 tie with a 33-17 run in the second half.
