GCC sweeps track & field crowns

WASHINGTON, PA, April 27, 2002--The Grove City College men's and women's track & field teams claimed their fourth straight sweep of the Presidents' Athletic Conference titles on Saturday at Washington & Jefferson College, winning the men's crown by a 199-point margin and the women's championship by 52 points.

Thiel College, Washington & Jefferson and Bethany College placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in both the men's and women's final team standings.

Grove City's men and women combined to place first in 21 of 35 events, including 12 on the men's side.

Junior Jeb Schreiber (Oil City, PA/Oil City) was named the PAC men's track & field athlete of the year after winning the 400-meter run (50.53) and 400 hurdles (56.82). Wolverine head coach Bill Jordan was voted PAC men's coach of the year.

Schreiber was one of several GCC athletes who claimed first place in multiple events. The others were: senior Scott Sukits (Prospect, PA/Slippery Rock) in the long jump (21-9.75), high jump (6-4) and triple jump (45-4); junior Ryan Mitchell (Centerville, OH/Centerville) in the 1,500 (4:21.37) and 5,000 (16:21.59); junior Jordyn Taylor (Stow, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) in the 100 (13.61) and 200 (27.67); sophomore Sally Lewis (Rochester, PA/Freedom) in the long jump (17-0) and triple jump (36-5.75) and freshman Katherine Muse (Akron, PA/Ephrata) in the 1,500 (5:13.58) and 3,000 (11:23.41).

Lady Wolverine junior Jessica Cooper (Butler, PA/Butler) set a new conference record in the pole vault with a first-place leap of 10-feet, six inches.
