Wolverines drop opener
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season Tuesday night with a 71-56 setback at Allegheny in non-conference action at the David Wise Center.
Allegheny jumped out to a 16-4 lead six minutes into the game and maintained its double-digit advantage for much of the first half. The Gators led 37-20 at halftime.
Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City with 15 points. Gibson also recorded five assists. Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added seven points. Erica Restich led Allegheny with 24 points and Daryl Ford tossed in 16.
Grove City shot 35 percent (20 of 58) from the field while Allegheny converted 26 of 68 (39 percent) attempts. Allegheny owned a 41-39 edge in rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) led Grove City with eight rebounds.
Grove City committed 26 turnovers and Allegheny turnover over the ball 17 times.
Grove City will face Alvernia Friday night at 8 p.m. in the semifinals of the Frostburg State Tournament in Frostburg, Md.
