Grove City rallies for win

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team rallied from a 31-17 halftime hole to pull out a 55-54 victory over Alvernia Friday night in the opening round of Frostburg State's Jim Crawley Tournament.

The Wolverines will now face North Carolina Wesleyan in Saturday's championship game at 4 p.m. North Carolina Wesleyan clipped Frostburg State in Friday's first semifinal, 52-49.

Grove City led 55-53 with one second left when Alvernia's Kaitlyn Yoh went to the foul line for two shots. Yoh made the first one but missed the tying free throw after the Wolverines had taken a 30-second timeout between the shots.

Grove City opened the second half with a 19-4 run over the first nine minutes of the period. The Wolverines pulled ahead 36-35 on a three-pointer from freshman forward Kelsey Whaley (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview). The teams would swap the lead six times over the nine minutes before Grove City took the lead for good, 51-49, with 2:33 left on a layup by freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).

The lead grew to 54-49 with 1:21 left on a jumper from senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley). Gebrosky led Grove City with 16 points while Whaley added 10.

Grove City shot 15 of 26 (58 percent) from the field in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines converted 21 of 49 (43 percent) field goal attempts. Alvernia also shot 43 percent from the field, knocking down 18 of 42 attempts.

Shirey and sophomore center Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) both contributed eight points for Grove City. Gebrosky and Shirey each had five assists. Shirey also had four steals. Coneby and junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) both had five rebounds. Alvernia owned a 32-28 rebound edge.

Allie Toczylowski led Alvernia with 15 points. Yoh added 10. Grove City now owns a 3-0 edge in the all-time series.

Saturday's clash with North Carolina Wesleyan will represent the first-ever meeting between the teams.
