Wolverines blast Bison

GROVE CITY, PA, April 12, 2002 -- The Grove City College baseball team collected a total of 31 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany Friday, 13-2 and 20-4 at GCC.

In the opener, the Wolverines pounded out 16 hits. Designated hitter Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) belted a three-run homer as part of the Wolverines' five-run fifth inning. Diller also singled while second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Center fielder Eric Bell (Grove City, PA/Grove City) singled twice as did Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and catcher Matt Skipper (Canton, Ohio/Canton South). First baseman Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) doubled and singled.

Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids) permitted just five hits in seven innings to record the win, his first of the year. Gundy (1-1) fanned nine Bethany batters.

Grove City (3-10, 3-3 PAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as senior Drew Hoagland (Butler, PA/Knoch) cracked a three-run homer. The Wolverines added five more runs in the second, two in the third and eight in the sixth. Grove City batted around twice.

In the second inning, Diller hit a two-run homer while freshman third baseman John Mycyk (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) followed with a three-run blast. Senior Mike Volchko (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the sixth. Skipper doubled and singled while Cliff Emery (Warren, Ohio/Champion) doubled.

Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) got the win, hurling five innings. Ben Helms (Meade, WA/St. Georges) and Hull each threw one scoreless inning of relief.

Bethany fell to 5-16 overall and 2-7 in the PAC.
