Grove City in 1st at Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team is in first place after the first night of competition in Grove City's two-day James E. Longnecker Invitational. The Wolverines lead the 11th annual event with 441.5 team points. W&J is in second with 239.5 points following Friday night's action.

Grove City highlighted the evening by sweeping both relay events. Grove City's 200 free relay quartet of junior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), junior Drew Snyder (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley), freshman Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) and junior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) opened the meet by posting a victorious time of 1 minute, 25.48 seconds.

Coppelli, Whitbeck, sophomore Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and Peter Larsen capped Friday's action by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:35.44.

Whitbeck also won the 50 with an NCAA Division III Championships qualifying time of 20.46 seconds. That time also sets a new Longnecker Invitational record. Snyder took second in the 50 (22.30) while Peter Larsen placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:01.53).

Grove City's "B" 400 medley relay team of freshman Matt Leonard (Lake City, Fla./Homeschooled), freshman Bennett Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville), senior Nick Barker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) and senior Tyler May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) earned runner-up honors with a time of 3:42.59.

Senior Jeremy Harbaugh (South Park, Pa./South Park) placed third in the 500 with a time of 4:59.58.

Grove City also swept the top two spots in 1-meter diving Friday night. Senior Joe Riddell (Osny, France/Paul-Emil Victor) won 1-meter diving with a Longnecker Invitational-record score of 256.90 points. Sophomore Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) placed second with 239.20 points.

Saturday's first session will begin at 10 a.m. The Saturday evening session will begin at 6 p.m.
