Grove City improves to 6-1

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team improved to 6-1 overall Saturday afternoon by earning a 144-119 win over host Hiram in a non-conference dual meet.

Junior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) paced the Wolverines by picking up a pair of individual wins. He won the 800-meter freestyle in 9 minutes, 21.84 seconds, then won the 50-meter free in 26.10.

Sophomore Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won the 200m breaststroke in 2:35.38 while freshman Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) won the 400m free (4:24.85). Junior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) won the 100m backstroke in 1:08.19 and freshman Ian Smyth (Troy, Pa./Troy) took first in the 200m free (2:09.47).

Senior diver Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won 1-meter diving with 240.85 points.

Sophomore Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) touched first in the 100m fly (1:01.78) on an exhibition basis while classmate Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) took first on an exhibition basis in the 200 individual medley (2:23.10).

Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson Saturday, January 16, 2010 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
