Grove City tops Saint Vincent in league opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving improved to 2-0 overall with a 163-93 home victory over Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet at James E. Longnecker Pool Saturday afternoon.

Grove City athletes touched first in all 16 events Saturday. Junior Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) earned two wins for the Wolverines to help lead the way. Kim won the 200 free in 1 minute, 48.39 seconds and then took first in the 200 butterfly (2:04.56).

Freshman Dave Bossert (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) opened the individual races by winning the 1650 in 17:51.06 while senior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) won the 100 back (53.61). Sophomore Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) won the 200 back in 1:57.61.

Freshman Noah Walker (Lexington, Ky./Homeschooled) took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.84) and junior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) earned first in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.95).

Senior Matt Armstrong (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) won the 50 free (23.28) while senior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) captured the 100 free in 48.72 seconds.

Sophomore Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) touched first in the 500 (4:51.33) while junior Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) posted a top time of 54.32 in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Louis Gabrielle (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) recorded a top time of 2:07.96 in the 200 individual medley.

Sophomore Peter Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) won 1-meter diving with 120.20 points.

Coppelli, Bowser, Gagliardo and Nielsen opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.15.

Grove City will visit longtime rival Carnegie Mellon next Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
