Moment
7: Alfery stops 18 shots as Wolverine men earn tie with PAC-leading
Thomas More
Today's “13-14 Rewind: Moment of the Year”
also
takes us to November 2nd and the Grove City College men's soccer team's
Senior Day and regular-season finale with Presidents' Athletic
Conference leader Thomas More.
The Saints came in winners of 11-straight
matches while the Wolverines were unbeaten in their previous seven
games, going 5-0-2 during that stretch.
Amidst dreary, rainy conditions, Thomas More would dominate the first
half, striking in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Midway through the
second half, however, Grove City would steal the momentum and eventually
equalized in the 82nd minute when sophomore Tim Shackleton dropped a
ball back to freshman Dale Reese, who played a beautiful left-footed
bending shot past the Saints' keeper.
From there, Alfery kept Thomas More off the board through the remainder
of regulation and two overtime periods, recording a career-high 18 saves
(six in the overtimes) to preserve the tie. Alfery's save total was the
highest in the PAC in two years and the most by a Grove City goalkeeper
since Dave Paterline recorded the same number on October 25, 1997.
