First Game Box   Second Game Box

GROVE CITY, PA, April 23, 2001--In the most memorable doubleheader played on the Grove  City College softball diamond this century, the Lady Wolverines (6-10, 4-4 PAC) swept a pair from visiting Waynesburg College (6-9, 1-5 PAC) by finals of 3-0 and 9-8 in eight innings Monday.

Junior Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) threw a no-hitter in the first game, striking out four and walking three over seven innings.  LeVake (2-5) retired 20 of the 23 batters she faced, recording 10 fly-ball outs and six groundouts.

Meanwhile, the top third of the Lady Wolverine batting order provided the necessary offensive punch, accounting for all seven Grove City hits.  Sophomore CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.  Freshman 2B Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) also went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.  Junior SS Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) drove in a pair of runs with a double in three at-bats.

In the nightcap, Grove City rallied from a 8-3 deficit with a five-run sixth and won it in the eighth when sophomore C Jayne Mincey (Grove City, PA/Grove City) singled home senior LF Jessie Renaldo (Brookville, PA/Brookville) with the game-winner.  Renaldo led off the eighth with a double and was sacrificed to third by freshman pitcher Molly Forney (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona).  Mincey came to the plate with one out and plated Renaldo with a solid grounder inside the first-base bag.

The Lady Wolverines collected a season-high 16 hits in Game Two with Renaldo going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two RBI and three runs scored.  Murphy went 3-for-5, while Smith, Atwood, Forney and freshman 1B Kassie Hayes (Grove City, PA/Grove City) added two hits apiece.

Forney notched the victory (2-2), allowing eight runs on 12 hits and fanning six over eight innings.
