Grove City downs Bearcats in conference opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 overall Saturday afternoon with a 150-104 victory over visiting Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Nine different Grove City swimmers earned individual victories Saturday. Senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) won the 50 free in 25.62 seconds while freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) won the 100 free in 55.29. Junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) took first in the 200 free (1:58.50) and classmate Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) won the 500 (5:22.83).

Freshman Liv Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) completed Grove City freestyle sweep by winning the 1650 in 19:29.73.

Senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.96) and sophomore Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.69. Freshman Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) took first in the 100 backstroke (1:03.49) while junior Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) prevailed in the 200 back (2:18.37).

Junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) touched first in the 100 fly (1:01.68) and 200 individual medley (2:14.60). Cassano, Palumbo, Ryan and Riesmeyer opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:51.99.

Ryan, Richert, freshman Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, Pa./Homeschooled) and senior Caroline Simmons (Edinboro, Pa./Saucon Valley) closed the meet with the top time in the 400 free relay as the quartet posted a 3:48.37 clocking.

Junior Moriah Ujano (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) earned the top score in both 1- and 3-meter diving. Ujano tallied a 178.70 total score in 1-meter and then recorded a 180.65 score on the 3-meter board.

Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon next Saturday at 1 p.m.
