Grove City athletes excel at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team produced several notable efforts Saturday afternoon at the Westminster Invitational in the Wolverines' final tune-up for the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships.

Junior sprinter Mary Majchrowicz (Sunnyvale, Calif./The King's Academy) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships by winning the 400-meter dash Saturday. Majchrowicz won the 400 in a College-record time of 57.31 seconds. That time surpasses the provisional qualifying standard of 57.60.

Majchrowicz also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 200 with a runner-up time of 26.03. Majchrowicz, junior Kate Bender (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), junior Sam Gathers (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and junior Brittany Moore (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) placed second in the 4x400 relay with an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:09.86.

Bender took third in the 800 (2:27.63) while sophomore Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) finished fourth in the 1500 (5:06.95). Junior Candice Coholich (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) placed fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 13:14.92, one spot ahead of sophomore Sarah Hirsh (Hanover, Pa./South Western). Hirsh posted a time of 13:28.20.

Freshman Sara Wagoner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) posted top-five finishes in both hurdle events. Wagoner finished fourth in the 100 high hurdles with a time of 16.57, then crossed fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:12.57).

In the field, sophomore Megan Fellows (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) took third in the discus with a throw of 105 feet. Senior Ashley Metcalfe (York Harbor, Maine/Portsmouth Christian, N.H.) cleared 4-8 in the high jump to place fourth. Sophomore Katie Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) finished fifth in the triple jump (32-1 1/2) while Moore placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 14-8 3/4.

Grove City will host the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, April 28 at Robert E. Thorn Field.
